Hawkeyes Win 15 Titles in Season Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team opened the 2021 indoor season Saturday winning 15 event titles and setting 44 personal bests at the Hawkeye Border Battle inside the UI Rec Building.

Iowa hosted Minnesota in the opener, recording official marks for the first time since the Big Ten Indoor Championships in March 2020.

Six Hawkeyes recorded seven marks that landed in the all-time top 10. Jamie Kofron recorded a mark of 14.77 meters to win the shot put and slide into ninth all-time. She placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 18.11 meters, eighth all-time. Amanda Howe won the weight throw at 19.11 meters, besting her previous mark that ranks third all-time.

Freshman Max Murphy climbed into eighth-place all-time in the men’s mile, finishing his collegiate debut in 4:06.70. Freshman Jenoah Mckiver won his first collegiate 400 meters in 46.93, a mark that ranks ninth all-time in school history.

In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, Tionna Tobias improved on her personal-best with a mark of 8.54, 10th all-time. Tobias also won the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.77 meters.

Jamal Britt jumped from eighth to a tie for fifth on Iowa’s all-time long jump list, hitting 7.60 meters and matching Paul Jones’ 1990 mark.

The Hawkeyes return to competition Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Nebraska Open in Lincoln, Nebraska.
