Iowa Posts 11 Top-10 Marks at Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field registered 11 top-10 program marks at the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Senior thrower Tyler Lienau set an Iowa record, 21.38m (70-1), in the weight throw.

“Tyler [Lienau] really helped set the tone for the weekend,” Iowa Director of Track & Field Joey Woody said. “That’s what you need, especially, when we get into championship meets. When you have athletes performing on that first day, it’s always really important to get that momentum going. It can be almost like a snowball effect. Those guys really set the tone and I think it will only keep getting better.”

All four of the Hawkeyes’ men’s weight throw competitors rank on the top-10 list for the program after Friday, including Lienau’s school record, sophomore Jordan Hawkins’ seventh ranked mark (19.52m, 64-0) and sophomore Jordan Johnson’s ninth ranked throw (9th, 19.11m, 62-8). Freshman Sean Smith broke on to the list at 10th (18.81m, 61-8).

On Saturday, the Iowa top-10 marks continued with sophomore Kat Moody’s, 16.32m (53-6.5), shot put (3rd all-time), sophomore Myreanna Bebe’s, 8.30, 60-meter hurdle (4th all-time), sophomore LaSarah Hargrove’s, 23.58, 200 meters (5th all-time), junior James Carter Jr.’s, 15.50m (50-10.25), triple jump (5th all-time), senior Nikolas Curtiss’, 18.53m (60-9.5), shot put (7th all-time), freshman Jenoah McKiver’s, 46.83, 400 meters (8th all-time), freshman Kayla Hutchins’, 12.44m (40-9.75), triple jump (8th all-time) and freshman Khullen Jefferson’s, 21.23, 200-meters (9th all-time).

Additionally, four Hawkeyes set meet records, including Lienau’s weight throw, Carter and Hutchins’ triple jumps and sophomore Kalen Walker’s 6.71 mark in the 60 meters. The men’s (3:09.98) and women’s (3:40.00) 4×400-meter relay squads also set meet records. The men’s quad included sophomore Spencer Gudgel, freshman Chadrick Richards, McKiver and junior Julien Gillum, and the women’s quartet included senior Mallory King, senior Payton Wensel, junior Mariel Bruxvoort and freshman Tesa Roberts.

HEAR FROM IOWA DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD JOEY WOODY…
“I liked the way our athletes came out and competed, whether that was winning their event or just competing to win their heat or flight. We had a little bit of a break, so it’s nice to get through that and get back to competing on the track. A lot of athletes had multiple events today, so to get through the weekend with most of our kids healthy, I was pleased.”

“LaSarah [Hargrove] was phenomenal in the 200 meters today. We’ve been seeing it in practice, it was just a matter of her executing her race.”

“We have some pretty talented freshmen and it’s pretty fun watching them compete at a high level. Chadrick Richards is a pretty special kid, and he’s going to do some big things for us.”

“It’s fun to see our freshmen getting some confidence and building on that. We definitely have a deep group. That was the plan when I started coaching and recruiting for the women. We wanted to get them to where the men’s hurdle program is at and I think we are getting close.”
