Hawkeyes Takes Down Illinois in B1G Dual

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — University of Iowa swimming and diving defeated border-rival Illinois, 166.50-133.50 at the ARC Pool on Friday.

“We are very excited to have earned a victory against Illinois and get another Big Ten win this season,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “Overall, our team displayed grit and resiliency from event to event. There were point swings for both teams throughout the contest, so I was thrilled to see our team persevere and come away with the win.”

The Hawkeyes tallied nine individual wins. Freshman Olivia Swalley earned three first-place finishes in the 100 (1:03.48) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.86), and in the 400 IM (4:21.54). Sophomore Scarlet Martin added a victory in the 100 butterfly (54.74) with an ARC pool record and in the 200 butterfly (2:01.95).

Both Hawkeye relays placed first and set ARC pool records. Fifth-year Kennedy Gilbertson, Swalley, Martin and freshman Jenna Kerr, started the day off with a victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:45.54. To finish off the meet, Gilbertson, Kerr, sophomore Sabina Kupcova, and Martin swam the 400 free relay in a time of 3:25.84.

The Iowa divers also had a fantastic day notching a pair of victories for the Hawkeyes. Junior Makayla Hughbanks won the 3-meter dive with a new collegiate best of 356.93, also bettering her fifth all-time best mark at Iowa.
