Hawkeyes Clinch Season Opener

“Tonight was a total team effort to earn the win against a really good UNI team,” Iowa Head Coach Nathan Mundt said. “We had some great performances by Olivia Swalley, Makayla Hughbanks, Olivia Frantum, and Annie Galvin to begin the season. Now can learn what we can do better heading into our next meet two weeks from tonight.”

The Iowa divers started the day strong for the Hawkeyes. Senior Makayla Hughbanks collected two individual wins in both the 1-meter (289.73) and 3-meter (305.25) dives, respectively. Junior Lainey Woodward and senior Geneva Pauly added points for the Hawkeyes as well. Woodward got second in the 1-meter with a score of 267.75 and Pauly came in third in the 3-meter with a score of 240.38.

The Hawkeye swimmers tallied eight individual wins and one relay win. Sophomore Olivia Swalley earned three first-place finishes in both the 100 (1:03.17) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.77) and in the 200 IM (2:03.40). Senior Annie Galvin and sophomore Olivia Frantum added two wins of their own as well. Galvin swept the 100 (56.40) and 200 (2:03.38) backstroke and Frantum won the 500 (5:05.89) and 1,000 (10:24.59) freestyle.

Galvin, Swalley, junior Scarlet Martin, and freshman Nora Kemp led the Hawkeyes 200 Medley Relay to first place with a time of 1:45.11.

The Hawkeyes return home to take on Big Ten opponent, Nebraska, on Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
