ORLANDO, Fla. – Sophomore Ryan Johnson and junior Lizzy Korczak set school records to open the outdoor season for University of Iowa track and field at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational on Friday.
“We had a fantastic opening to our outdoor season today, led by Lizzy’s huge personal best and school record in the javelin,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “The momentum kept building with Mike’s big opening season mark in the javelin. It was very exciting to see a huge personal best for Ryan in his first hammer throw competition as a Hawkeye to build on his terrific indoor season. Ali Frandsen had a terrific start to her outdoor season with an almost two second personal best today.”
On her first attempt, Korczak launched a throw of 58.10 meters, shattering the previous all-time record at Iowa. She surpassed her previous personal best and top-ten mark of 50.62 meters, with five of her throws exceeding that mark.
Johnson crushed the previous all-time record at Iowa in the men's hammer throw with a 71.12-meter toss. Five of Johnson’s throws eclipsed the 68-meter mark. Sophomore Austin Busch took home the bronze with a 63.70-meter toss. Junior Whalen Walker finished with a personal best of 57.48 meters.
Junior Mike Stein opened his outdoor season with a first-place finish in the javelin. He launched a 75.10-meter throw to seal the win for the Hawkeyes.
Junior Wisdom Williams took home the gold in the women’s shot put with a personal-best 16 meters. Williams improved on her fourth all-time rank at Iowa with this mark.
Sophomore Maud Zeffou-Poaty secured the silver in the women's long jump, with a leap of 6.07 meters.
In the women’s women’s 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Ali Frandsen clocked in 59.83, a significant personal best that landed her in fifth place.
