EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Iowa cross country wrapped up competition at the Big Ten Championships at the Forest Akers East Golf Course on Friday morning. Sophomore Elena Torres crossed the line first for the Hawkeye women, while senior Hayden Kuhn led the men’s team. Both teams finished 14th in their respective races, with the women taking home 410 points and the men earning 415 points.

Torres led the Hawkeyes for the fifth consecutive meet, finishing the 6,000 meters with a season-best time of 21:34.4. The women’s team had solid finishes out of sophomores Hillary Trainor (21:46.6) and Marissa Long (22:00.0), who both grabbed season bests. Once again, freshman Ella Magallan secured a scoring spot for the Hawkeyes. The three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week ran a 22:14.8. Filling in the final spot for the top five was junior Audra Soderlind with a new personal-best time of 22:15.5. Ellie Rathe also notched a lifetime best with a 23:30.3.

Leading the men’s team was senior Hayden Kuhn with a time of 24:56.8 in the 8,000 meters. Also running well for the men’s team was freshman Elias Arbuckle (25:04.4), who finished second for the Hawkeye men. Seniors Carson Houg (25:21.9) and Brayden Burnett (25:31.6), along with sophomore Kyle Montgomery (25:28.0), filled out the scoring for the Hawkeyes. Houg, Arbuckle and Montgomery have finished in the top five for the Hawkeyes in every race this season.

After scoring in their Big Ten Championships debut, the dynamic freshman duo of Elias Arbuckle and three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week Ella Magallan have now scored in a combined nine out of ten races.

Oregon landed both team titles and had individual champions in the women’s 6,000 meters and men’s 8,000 meters.

HEAR FROM COACH HASENBANK
“The women ran a very strong race today. Obviously, we are competing in a great conference. If you watched the live results, our entire roster continued to move up throughout the race. We finished with a very strong last 1K. We had three sophomores and a freshman in our top five. Elena continued to set the pace up front and Hillary really improved this season. On the men’s side, Eli Arbuckle had a really consistent season as a true freshman and I am proud of the season that he has put together. Hayden ran much better today. Kyle had a great start to the race, took a risk to put himself out there and wasn’t quit able to finish the way he would have liked. He has been fairly consistent. We will regroup and get both squads ready for the NCAA Regional in two weeks.”

Up Next: Iowa heads to the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 14 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
