LOS ANGELES – University of Iowa swimming and diving fell in a dual to UCLA, 179-101, on Friday night at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Juniors Olivia Swalley and Olivia Frantum led the Hawkeyes in their battle against the Bruins. Swalley tallied a win in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:04.39. Frantum collected a season-best time of 10.20.54 in the 1,000 free.
The 400 free relay team of freshman Payton Flowers, sophomores Rachel Dildine and Audrey Olen, and junior Jenna Kerr ended the meet strong, finishing first place in 3:23.65.

“We competed against a quality Big Ten team today and had strong performances to begin this part of our season. For our first meet since our invite, I thought we got better as the meet went on. To win the last two events showed toughness and determination. We look forward to some quality racing again tomorrow.”
Swalley and Frantum continued their momentum throughout the meet. Swalley placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:03.27) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.63). Frantum took silver in the 500 free (5:03.94) and bronze in the 1,000 free (10:20.54).
Flowers, Swalley, Dildine and Kerr swam a 1:44.68 in the 200 medley relay to place second. Coming in third were sophomores Hannah Cousins and Emilie Mosner, junior Josie Hood and Olen, who touched the wall in 1:46.46. Right behind them was the team of sophomore Elizabeth Beam, freshman Willa Hage, senior Olivia Asay and sophomore Nora Kemp. That group placed fourth with a final time of 1:47.46. Junior Addie Crain, freshman Ella Jean Kelly and juniors Mallory Kell and Hope Schimming took fifth in 1:48.26.
In the one-meter dive, all three Hawkeyes advanced to the finals. Lainey Woodward finished third with a combined 571.70. Zita Bernatsky placed sixth with 542.95 points. Geneva Pauly rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes with 529.60 from the one-meter springboard.
Up Next: The Hawkeyes will return to the Spieker Aquatics Center for a quad meet against UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Utah on Jan.10th. Action will begin at noon.
