Three Hawkeyes Win Gold

This weekend the University of Iowa track team participated in the Mark Messersmith Invitational hosted by Northern Iowa. The Hawkeyes competed alongside several other regional schools including Drake, Iowa State, University of Minnesota-Duluth and University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

As a team, the Hawkeyes did well; three women earned individual gold medals and had two winning relay squads, while three men took first place in their respective events. Several Iowa women and men also qualified for the NCAA regional meet.

Two field event competitors qualified on the men’s side. Junior Adam Hamilton had a first place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 220-6 and senior Tim Brodersen placed second in the discus with a toss of 173-7. Juniors Tiffany Johnson and Peaches Roach also qualified in individual events. Johnson took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.75 and Roach won gold in the high jump by clearing 5-8.75.

Other individual winners for Iowa included freshman Renee White in the long jump (19-6), senior Brian Rae in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:18.89) and sophomore Jeremy Petsche in the high jump (6-8). Five Hawkeye women and eight men also set new personal bests in the meet.

The Hawkeye men compete in the Tom Botts Invitational next weekend hosted by Missouri University in Columbia, MO. The women’s team will travel to Walnut, CA, to compete in the three-day Mt. SAC Relays.
