GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Iowa track and field sophomore Isaac Lewis updated Iowa's all-time list at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday afternoon. Lewis posted a personal-best time of 49.68 in the men’s 400-meter hurdles to move to third in program history. In Stanford, Yohana Yual moved to eighth all-time in the 3K steeple in 8:57.17.
“We had a great start to the weekend today,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Isaac led the Hawkeyes in Florida with a huge personal-best and top three all-time performance in the 400 hurdles. That’s an amazing time for his season opener. He’s got a great shot to break 49 seconds by the end of the season. I thought Nick Gorsich ran a great race and set himself up well to run 50 very soon. At Stanford, I thought Will and Brayden ran great 5,000-meter races and set some nice personal bests."
Competing in Gainesville, Lewis secured second place with his career-best 49.68, which now ranks third in Iowa program history. Freshman Nicholas Gorsich also turned in a personal-best performance, finishing 11th with a time of 51.25.
At the Stanford Invitational, senior Yohana Yual clocked an 8:57.17 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the night session. Yual improved his standing on Iowa's all-time list and rose to eighth in program history. Freshman Carson Houg earned a personal best of 3:51.32 in the men’s 1,500 meters, securing fourth place. In the men’s 5,000 meters, two Hawkeyes achieved lifetime bests, including junior Will Ryan, who finished in 14:05.99. Teammate Brayden Burnett also recorded a personal best, clocking in at 14:17.38.
In the women’s 5,000 meters at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, freshman Elena Torres finished fifth with a time of 16:34.93. Additionally, all three Hawkeyes that competed in the women’s 1,500 meters posted personal bests. Junior Jalyssa Blazek crossed the line in 4:34.67, sophomore Clare Kelly finished in 4:36.36, and sophomore Cameron Kalaway recorded a time of 4:37.29.
