IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field sophomore Daniela Wamokpego reset the program record in the triple jump with a 13.51-meter mark on Friday afternoon at the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility.
In her final attempt, Wamokpego set the school record, meet record and posted the NCAA DI’s seventh-best mark at 13.51 meters. The sophomore from Meaux, France, improved her position as a national qualifier in the event and rose to second in the Big Ten as her result went final. Wamokpego’s previous school record was set at the Jimmy Grant Invite in December of this season.
Austin Kresley solidified his spot as second all-time on Iowa’s program-record list, improving with a 6.62 in the finals of the 60 meters. Kresley was the top finisher in the prelims, blazing to the finals in 6.64, which was a then-personal record. The senior from Oakley, California, claimed second in the finals, finishing behind unattached Kalen Walker.
“Overall, today was a great tune-up meet for us,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Daniela had a big-time jump that moved her up in the national standings. We are so happy for her. Getting Austin back in the 60 meters was really good. We knew he was ready to run a hot time and he did that, tying his PR in the prelims and then running 6.62 in the finals. That shows he is in a good spot heading into next week.”
Along with Wamokpego, the Hawkeyes secured two more wins on Friday, starting at the indoor track with freshman Ethan Glyde winning the high jump title at 2.08 meters. Junior Sal Capaldo notched a season best of 1.95 meters. At the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, Sean Smith claimed the crown in the weight throw at 21.16 meters. Teammates Austin Busch (20.61 meters), Bryce Ruland (19.82 meters) and Walker Whalen (18.58 meters) secured top-five finishes.
Kalil Johnson shined in the 60-meter hurdles, placing second overall in 7.89. Freshman Tyler Kenaga finished fourth in his finals’ appearance (8.06). Wisdom Williams was a silver medalist in the shot put, recording a mark of 15.67 meters on her fourth throw.
