PHILADELPHIA — University of Iowa senior tight end George Kittle was selected by San Francisco in the fifth round of Saturday’s NFL Draft. Kittle was the 146th player picked overall.
King, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, is the first Hawkeye tight end drafted since C.J. Fiedorowicz in 2014. He is the eighth Hawkeye tight end chosen in the NFL Draft since 2003.
In 11 games last season, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Kittle recorded 22 receptions for 314 yards and four touchdowns. Kittle missed two full games, and parts of other contests, due to injury. He earned honorable mention recognition from both Big Ten coaches and media, and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors four straight years.
In his career, Kittle recorded 48 receptions for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns. He earned the Team Hustle Award as a senior and was named honorable mention All-America by SI.com as a junior in 2015.
Over the past four seasons Kittle helped the Hawkeyes post a 35-18 record while participating in four straight January bowl games, including the 2016 Rose Bowl Game.
The 49ers finished 2-14 last season, fourth in the NFC West Division. They were last in the NFL with 182 passing yards per game.
Kittle is the 62nd player coached by Ferentz at the University of Iowa to be selected in the NFL Draft.
