Hawkeyes Defeat Cornhuskers in Home Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa swimming and diving defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 170-130, at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday afternoon.  

 “Tonight was excellent to see a total team effort to earn a victory against a quality opponent like Nebraska,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “It was fun to see our team rally to start the season with a Big Ten win at home.”  

Senior Annie Galvin, sophomore Olivia Swalley and freshmen Rachel Dildine and Nora Kemp kicked off the meet for Iowa with a win in the 200 Medley with a time of 1:42.97. The Hawkeyes dominated the short distance events, winning the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle races, along with the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Swalley accounted for three of the Hawkeyes individual victories in the 100 (1:02.38), and 200 (2:16.88) breaststroke respectively, as well as the 200 IM (2:02.91). 

Hawkeye divers brought the heat as well. Senior Makayla Hughbanks took first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 321.00. Juniors Geneva Pauly and Lainey Woodward set new collegiate bests in the 1-meter dives with scores of 297.68 and 276.08 respectively. 

Iowa freshman swimmers Dildine and Kemp took four of the Hawkeyes’ nine individual events. Dildine took first place victories in her season debuts of both the 50 Free (23.55) and 100 Fly (55.99). Kemp dominated the freestyle races collecting two personal records in both the 100 (52.06) and 200 (1:51.94).  

The Hawkeyes were able to close out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay. Kemp, sophomore Josie Hood, sophomore Olivia Frantum, and Dildine brought it home with a time of 3:27.85 to secure the Iowa win. 

The Hawkeyes host the Black & Gold Intrasquad at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City on Oct. 25. The meet begins at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
