DOTHAN, AL – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its 2005 season debut Friday night, falling 6-1 to Troy State at the Wiregrass Baseball Classic on Dothan, AL.
The Hawkeye offense was shut down by Trojan hurler Brent Adcock, who threw seven innings of one-hit ball and struck out 13. L.J. Mims and Andy Lytle picked up the only two Hawkeye hits on the day.
In the top of the first, Iowa took an early 1-0 lead when Lytle was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an error by the second baseman.
Troy came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, using a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Henry Gutierrez.
Things remained tied up until the bottom of the fifth, when three singles and an error by Hawkeye starter Tim Gudex put three more runs on the board, giving Troy State a 4-1 lead.
Luke O’Laughlin replaced Gudex on the hill in the bottom of the sixth, and allowed a run on an RBI single by Adam Goodwin. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh gave Troy State a 6-1 lead.
Travis Sweet pitched a scoreless eighth for the Hawkeyes, allowing one hit.
Iowa will play Middle Tennessee State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
