IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team (28-17, 4-4) was defeated by ninth-ranked Michigan (31-6, 3-1), 2-0. The Hawkeyes were only able to collect three hits against the Wolverines.
Michigan, who was listed as the home team, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single by Angela Findlay.
The Wolverines plated another run in the bottom of the fourth off an Iowa error. Singles by Allison Kidman and Teddi Ewing put runners on first and second with two outs and starting pitcher Brittany Weil got Maggie Viefhaus to hit a high fly ball near home plate. Weil and catcher Emily Nichols both chased after the ball and collided near home plate. The ball dropped, which allowed Ewing to score.
Freshman Taylor Leichsenring, junior Summer Downs and senior Sami Baugh each tallied a hit.
Weil took her fifth loss of the season. She threw all six innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits and struck out one.
Iowa will host Michigan State Sunday in a doubleheader starting at Noon.
