IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team has announced its annual winter clinic dates. The high school player clinics will be held January 9-10, and the youth clinic will be January 23. The clinics will be held inside the Bubble across from Kinnick Stadium.
“Our winter clinics have become extremely well attended and are a great opportunity for us to work with high school age students,” Head Coach Gayle Blevins said. “The Defensive Clinic, Hitting Clinic and Pitchers/Catchers Clinic provide students the opportunity to build even better softball skills and become more familiar with our Hawkeye Program. The Youth Clinic is a great chance for younger students to work directly with the Hawkeyes. The clinics are wonderful opportunities for our program to reach out to softball enthusiasts everywhere.”
The Jan. 9 session will start with a defensive clinic from 9 a.m.-noon. It will cover the fundamentals of all defensive positions with additional emphasis on defensive coverages.
From 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 9, the Hawkeyes will be giving a hitting clinic. This will cover the basics of hitting and slap hitting. The same hitting clinic will also be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 10.
Following the hitting clinic Jan. 10, Iowa will conduct a pitching/catching session from 1-4 p.m. It will cover pitch development and pitching/catching strategy. Parents or coaches will not be permitted to serve as catchers.
The youth clinic will be held from 1-4 p.m., Jan. 23. Girls and boys from second to seventh grade are eligible. Instruction will include hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, catching, base running and sliding.
Campers should bring their own gloves, bats and catchers gear. Each high school clinic costs $65 and the youth clinic is $45. Both include an Iowa softball T-shirt. Registration forms must be received by Dec. 17 and can be sent to the address below. Registration forms can be found online at hawkeyesports.com.
