IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team earned its eighth victory of the year, downing Northern Iowa, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Junior Anne Marie Thomas scored the first goal of the game in the 79th minute after senior Ashley Catrell beat her defender into the box and fed Thomas, who struck the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past diving UNI goalkeeper Nicole Postel.
“Ashley had a perfect cross, it went right through everybody,” said Thomas. “I was able to time it up and finish strong.”
Eighteen seconds later, however, the Panthers answered with a goal from sophomore Brady Clark on an aggressive attack following the Hawkeye goal.
“After we scored, it seemed like everyone let out a deep breath,” said UI head coach Ron Rainey. “We let down for a minute, they were able to finish, and it became a dogfight again.”
Time would expire after junior Cloe Lacasse sent a shot to the right of side of the goal, only to have it sent away by Postel.
Iowa came out with a vengeance in the overtime period, as the Hawkeyes immediately pushed the ball up the field. Lacasse fed senior Alex Melin who passed to Catrell, who proceeded to fire from 35 yards out into the top of the net to preserve the Hawkeyes’ unbeaten record.
“I saw their entire team in front of me, and I didn’t have any other option but to shoot,” said Catrell. “I happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
The win marks the end of the nonconference slate for Iowa, who now moves into Big Ten Conference play Sunday.
The Hawkeyes outshot their opponent for the eighth time this season, besting UNI, 26-4.
“We’re not going to outshoot a lot of teams 26-4 in conference play,” said Rainey. “We’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing well, and prepare for a very good team on Sunday.”
Iowa opens conference play at the Iowa Soccer Complex on Sunday against No. 15 Michigan. The match begins at 12 p.m. (CT), and it will be televised on Big Ten Network.
