IOWA CITY, Iowa — A pair of University of Iowa women’s golfers — Jessie Sindlinger and Morgan Kukla — notched top-three finishes at the 92nd Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship last weekend at Finkbine Golf Course. Sindlinger claimed medalist honors with a three-round 217 (+1), while Kukla carded a 227 (+11) to finish third.

Sindlinger, a senior, capitalized on her home course advantage, making par on 36 holes with nine birdies to claim a six-stroke victory. The Charles City, Iowa, native led the tournament throughout, posting a 71 (-1) in rounds one and three and a 75 (+3) in the second round.

“It was a lot of fun competing, especially since I got to play at Finkbine,” said Sindlinger. “I focused on staying positive and patient throughout the tournament. I felt this weekend came down to my short game and putting so it helped a lot knowing the greens and knowing where to hit them. The Iowa Amateur is a great tournament that is run well, and I want to thank everyone who had a part in hosting it.

“I’m excited to start my last season as a Hawkeye. This will be great momentum into our fall schedule.”

Kukla, a native of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, fired a 227 (+11) to finish third. The junior had her best round of the tournament on Friday, posting a one-over-par 73 behind four birdies on holes six, nine, 11, and 13.

Sindlinger and Kukla are two of seven returning letterwinners from last year’s record-breaking squad. The Hawkeyes claimed their first tournament title since 2012 at the 2015 Diane Thomason Invitational and broke the program’s 54-hole team score record (879; 2012) with an even-par 864 at the Johnie Imes Invitational.

Junior Jessica Ip and incoming freshman Sophie Liuare both in action at the U.S. Women’s Amateur this week. Fans can follow along with live stats at usga.org.
