IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa swimming and diving defeated Iowa State in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series meet, 215-84, on Friday night inside the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
“The whole team came out with a ton of energy tonight to get the rivalry started,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “First of all, just a great way to celebrate our seniors to start the meet. They’ve all had different paths coming here, but it’s been a lot of fun to watch them grow as Hawkeyes and represent us proudly. Then for them to lead us to victory tonight was really special against an in-state rival. To come together and get a win at this time of year leading into finals is really fantastic. So a lot of fun all the way through. We are looking forward to heading into the second half of the season.”
Iowa honored five seniors before the meet: Annie Galvin, Megan Hartlieb, Makayla Hughbanks, Alix O’Brien and Molly Pedersen. Galvin collected two individual event wins of her own, winning the 100 back in 54.30 for Iowa’s eighth-fastest time in history. Galvin also won the 200 back in 1:58.66. O’Brien took first in the 1,000 free, landing herself seventh all-time at Iowa with a time of 9:59.10 for another senior victory.
In total, the Hawkeyes collected 15 event wins, 10 lifetime bests and four updates to the program’s top-10 lists on the night.
Both dives resulted in victories for Iowa. Hughbanks took the 3-meter dive with a score of 351.85. Junior Geneva Pauly set a new personal best in the 1-meter dive with a score of 312.95, setting the eighth best mark in school history.
Iowa finished off the night on a high note, winning the 200 free relay. Freshman Rachel Dildine, Pedersen, freshman Nora Kemp, and sophomore Josie Hood closed out with a time of 1:33.75 to secure a Hawkeye victory.
University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving heads on the road to take on Miami in a dual on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 9 a.m. (CT). The meet will be held at Whitten Center Pool in Coral Gables, Florida.
