IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa swimming and diving team defeated Big Ten opponent Illinois, 151-149, on Friday in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
“That was an incredible, total team effort today,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “Every swim and every dive mattered in this very close contest. And because of that, we learned a lot about our team and who we are. I told the team that we can continue to improve and keep going with this momentum throughout the end of our season as it approaches. This was a very exciting win for our program to have a Big Ten win in our home pool. Going forward, we know that we have some excitement going into our next meet at Rutgers and into our championship season.”
Iowa and Illinois took turns with the lead throughout the day. When it counted most, Iowa was able to secure the win on its final race of the day in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Hawkeyes collected a total of 10 individual wins on the day. Sophomore Olivia Swalley collected three victories of her own in the 100 (1:02.50) and 200 (2:16.36) breaststroke, as well as the 200 IM (2:01.26). Five other Hawkeyes helped bring in their own titles towards an Iowa win.
Iowa divers tallied two of the individual wins on the day. Senior Makayla Hughbanks led the three-meter dive with a score of 317.55. All four divers placed in the top five of the three-meter. Junior Geneva Pauly led her own event in the one-meter dive with a score of 302.90.
“Overall, I am very pleased with their performance,” Iowa diving coach Todd Waikel said. “We are tired, we are banged up, and we met and exceeded our expectations. So, I'm very pleased with how they performed.”
University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving travels to Piscataway, New Jersey, to take on Rutgers and Nebraska on Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. and Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. (CT) inside Werblin Recreation Center.
