INDIANAPOLIS – University of Iowa senior Kalen Walker claimed the Big Ten title in the 60 meters Saturday afternoon at the 2026 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Walker became a three-time Big Ten champion after clocking a facility-record 6.54 to secure the gold in the 60 meters. He adds to his decorated Big Ten career, now winning the 60 meters along with the 100 meters and as part of the 4x100 relay. Close behind, teammate Darwin Jimenez finished in 6.56, earning fourth place. Jordan Gross rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes in sixth, matching his personal-best of 6.65 seconds. Gross also scored in the 200-meter final, finishing fourth with a personal-best that ranks fourth all-time at Iowa in 20.78.
The trio of Hawkeyes helped guide the men’s team to a third-place finish with 61 points. The women’s team placed eighth with 42 points.
“It was a tremendous weekend for our program,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “I’m so proud of how all our athletes battled the entire weekend. On championship Saturday, we showed out and finished strong. For the men to finish top three is a huge statement and shows how well they competed as a team.”
“Kalen has been an NCAA runner-up in the 60 meters, but he’s never won a 60 meter Big Ten title until today,” Woody added. “He had a great start and ran a fantastic finish, competing all the way to the finish line. Darwin ran an excellent race and finished just off the top three medals. I’m proud of how well he competed in his first Big Ten championship.”
Chioma Nwachukwu earned Big Ten second-team honors as the runner-up in the women’s 400 meters after posting a personal-best finish of 51.67. The mark ranks second all-time in Iowa program history.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Olicia Lucas, Izzy Zahn, Damaris Mutunga and Nwachukwu finished with the silver medal in 3:30.08 and ranks second all-time at Iowa.
“The women’s 4x400-meter relay had an amazing race with a great lead off from Olicia to put us in great position. Izzy had a huge PR split on the second leg and Damaris brought us back into second place at the final exchange. Chioma chased down the pack and almost caught USC to finish runner up in the last event of the meet. Both the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relays helped both teams solidify our place at the end of the meet.”
The Hawkeyes gathered major points in the women’s 600 meters, claiming three of the top five podium spots. Gabby Cortez led the charge, earning bronze with a personal-best 1:27.16, the second-fastest time in program history. Princess Uche improved her lifetime best for the second time this weekend, recording a 1:27.83 to finish fourth and moving to fourth all-time at Iowa. Damaris Mutunga rounded out the top five for the Hawkeyes in 1:28.20.
“The women had a tremendous finish to the weekend, scoring 21 points in the 600 meters, with Chioma delivering a huge personal best and a top-ten NCAA mark in the 400 meters,” Woody added. “Gabby ran an amazing race, leading from start to finish to win the first section of the 600 meters and posting a time that just missed the overall victory. It’s very impressive for her to come back and finish as runner-up after winning her Big Ten title last year.”
In the 60-meter hurdle finals, Blake Nyenati and Vaughn DeVaughn III finished fourth and fifth, respectively, each recording a time of 7.70 seconds.
Luke Knepp ran a personal-best and all-time record 3,000 meters to finish eighth. Knepp crossed the line in 8:04.99.
The Hawkeyes took home five all-Big Ten honors over the weekend. As champions, Ryan Johnson and Walker were first-team selections. Nwachukwu, Emmanuel Njoku and the women’s 4x400-meter relay team grabbed second-team honors as silver medalists.
