ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Iowa’s Vaughn DeVaughn III claimed the men’s 110-meter hurdle title to cap the UCF Black & Gold Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Vaughn DeVaughn III opened the day with a standout performance in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. After clocking 14.14 in the prelims, DeVaughn improved by over two-tenths of a second in the finals, winning the title in 13.92.
“We had a very good day today in Orlando,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Vaughn competed well in the 110-meter hurdles coming off his first 400-meter hurdle race last night. He qualified for the finals and then came back and had a great race to win the title, just off his personal-best from last year.”
In the women’s 100 meters, senior Holly Duax finished with bronze clocking a 11.60, while Jordan Gross placed sixth in 10.53 on the men’s side.
The Hawkeyes filled three of the top five spots in the women’s 800 meters, led by an all-time best performance by junior Leanna Lewis. Lewis clocked a personal-best and top-three performance in school history with a 2:04.76. Junior Rosemary Arthur secured the fourth spot with a personal-best and eighth fastest all-time performance in 2:06.02. Rounding out the top five was junior Princess Uche, who finished in 2:06.90.
“The women’s 800 meter group ran terrific today,” Woody added. “I am very proud of how that group competed. Leanna ran an awesome race today and huge personal-best to finish third. Rosemary had a great race coming off her 1,500 meter personal best last night. Princess also ran an impressive race for her first 800 ever.”
On the men’s side, senior Ryan Schreiner led the team with a 10th-place finish, while senior Derek Leicht and junior Carson Lane both recorded personal bests.
In the men’s 400 meters, four Hawkeyes locked in spots in the top 10, led by senior Zidane Brown, who finished fifth overall in 46.85. Sophomore Landon Fontenot claimed sixth place in 46.94. Redshirt freshman Jackson Johannes (47.23) and senior Terrick Johnson (47.35) took eighth and ninth place, respectively.
In the field, freshman Lovisa Ulvenstam soared 12.24 meters in the women’s triple jump to finish sixth. Duke Faley led the Hawkeyes in the men’s discus, finishing 10th with a 48.39-meter throw.
“Overall, we had a lot of great results this weekend and I’m looking forward to getting back home to train these next couple weeks before we hit the road,” Woody said.
Up Next: The Hawkeyes will take next weekend off before returning to competition April 1–4 at meets across the country, including the Texas Relays, Florida Relays, Bobcat Invitational, Stanford Invitational, and Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
