AMES, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field concluded its regular season with three titles at the Cyclone Twilight on Friday evening.
Sprinter Darwin Jimenez accounted for two of the event wins, picking up the 100-meter title in 10.16. He also won the 200-meter race in a lifetime best of 20.69. Arianna Williams claimed the women’s 400-meter title, racing a new best of 53.85.
Jimenez was joined by Olaolu Olatunde and Jordan Gross in the 100 meters. Olatunde (10.19) and Gross (10.27) ran wind-aided times that rounded out the top three of the prelims after Jimenez set the tone with the program’s third-fastest time of 10.11. The trio also ran well in the 200 meters with Jimenez (20.69) and Gross (20.69) setting personal bests and taking the top two spots. Olatunde finished fifth in 21.30.
“Darwin had a great day, winning two races today,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “He needed some races and needed this meet. We had good weather and are in a good spot heading into the Big Ten Championships. Darwin felt good and wanted to run the 200 and he ended up winning that race too.”
In the hurdles, Iowa had runner-up finishes from Isabel Evans and Blake Nyenati. Evans set two personal records, beginning with her 13.97 effort in the prelims of the women's 100-meter hurdles. She finished second later in the evening in 13.96. Nyenati ran a season-best 13.76 in the prelims of the men’s 110-meter edition, before closing the night in second in 13.83.
In Iowa’s only field event of the weekend, junior Wisdom Williams won the silver medal in the women’s shot put, sailing the third throw of her series 15.22 meters.
The Hawkeyes picked up four personal bests in the 800-meter races. Caleb Levy led the men with a fourth-place finish of 1:48.03. He now holds the No. 9 spot on Iowa’s all-time list. Evan Osler ran 2:00.35 for an update to his lifetime best. On the women’s side, Caila Lyons finished third in 2:06.29, while Lily Johannes went 2:12.86 around the track to secure a pair of personal records for the Hawkeyes.
Spencer Alf led the Iowa men in the 1,500 meters, racing a 3:50.21 personal best. Carson Houg ran the fastest time of his season and crossed the line in 3:50.56. Freshman Kyle Montgomery wrapped up his regular season with a 3:55.77 personal record. Clare Kelly paced the Iowa women with a ninth-place time of 4:31.22. Rowan Boulter tallied an update to her best and finished in 4:47.41.
“Building off of last week at Arizona and Musco, we performed well in this tune-up meet,” Woody added. “I feel good about our momentum and we are building at the right time. Our group is ready to go and we are excited for championship season.”
Up Next: Iowa heads to Lincoln, Nebraska, for the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 15-17.
