Tyler Stith begins his 11th season as head coach, following his return to his alma mater in August of 2014. Stith previously served as Assistant Coach at Iowa (2008-2011) and Minnesota (2011-2014).
During Stith’s tenure as head coach of the Iowa men’s golf program, the Hawkeyes have advanced to five NCAA Regionals and finished runner-up at the Big Ten Championships on three occasions.
In his first season as head coach at Iowa, Stith guided the Hawkeyes to their seventh straight NCAA Regional. Iowa finished sixth at the event, one stroke behind eventual national champion LSU. Carson Schaake led the Hawkeyes to a second-place finish at the 2015 Big Ten Championships after earning co-medalist honors and becoming the first Hawkeye to win the event since Brad Klapprott in 1992. Schaake and Knoll earned All-Big Ten honors.
In 2019, Stith led Iowa to five top five finishes, including the Hawkeye Invitational title with a school record shattering 54-hole score of 809 (-43), topping the previous mark by 24 strokes, while also setting a school record for 18-holes with a first-round score of 262 (-22). Stith also helped coach Alex Schaake to five top 10 finishes, earning Men’s Big Ten Golfer of the Year and the Les Bolstad award for leading the Big Ten with a 70.81 stroke average.
In 2021, Stith earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors following an impressive campaign. Under Stith’s direction, Iowa achieved five top five finishes, including two tournament championships at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island and the Hawkeye Invitational. Fifth-year senior Alex Schaake and sophomore Mac McClear also combined for three individual championships, the most for the Hawkeyes since the 2013 season.
That same season, Stith led Iowa to runner-up finishes at both the Big Ten Match Play and the Big Ten Championships, as the Hawkeyes qualified for the program’s 11th NCAA Regionals appearance since 2009. McClear earned Big Ten medalist honors and Schaake finished second as the Hawkeyes lost by one shot to Illinois. McClear’s three shot victory at Crooked Stick was his second win of the season. Schaake earned the Big Ten Player of the Year award and both he and McClear received All-Big Ten honors. McClear became Iowa’s second Big Ten Champion under Stith, while Schaake closed out his career as one of the most decorated players in program history. Schaake is the only Hawkeye to win Big Ten Player of the Year twice (2019, 2021) and the only athlete to earn all-conference postseason honors four times.
In 2022, McClear and teammate Ronan Kleu each earned individual bids to compete at NCAA Regionals, where McClear tied for 14th at 214 (-2). Both McClear and Kleu earned second team All-Big Ten honors. The Hawkeyes placed third at Big Ten Match Play, where they defeated Minnesota, two-seed Northwestern, and top-seeded Purdue, with one loss against Michigan State. Iowa finished seventh as a team at the Big Ten Championships, where four Hawkeyes placed inside the top 30 on the leaderboard.
In 2023, the Hawkeyes won the first ANF Fall Classic at Blue Top Ridge by six strokes, marking Stith’s fifth career team championship. McClear’s took home medalist honors with his three-shot victory for the fifth title of his career. The following spring, Stith and the Hawks finished t5th at the weather shortened Big Ten Championships. McClear cemented his place in the Iowa record books by finishing co-medalist at the event held at Galloway National in New Jersey. McClear’s second round 66 (-5) in tough conditions vaulted him up the leaderboard for his second Big Ten championship, becoming just the 16th athlete to win multiple Big Ten titles dating back to 1920. McClear’s sixth career victory tied Lonnie Nielson for the most in program history.
Stith served under Coach Mark Hankins for four seasons prior to joining the Minnesota staff in 2011. During that time, the Hawkeyes’ national ranking improved from #155 to #9. In his final season as Assistant Coach, Iowa won four times, culminating with a school record 10th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships, eclipsing a previous program-best 17th place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships.
At the University of Minnesota, Stith helped the Gophers win the 2014 Big Ten Championship and coached two-time PGA Tour winner, Erik Van Rooyen.
In his 10 seasons at Iowa, the Hawkeyes have won seven team championships and crowned 11 individual medalists. Stith has coached three individual Big Ten Champions (2015,2021,2023), two Big Ten Players of the Year (2019,2021), one All-American (2019), an Amateur Championship runner-up (2023), and a U.S. Amateur Championship runner-up (2024).
