TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Iowa track and field picked up three wins, three program top-10 marks and 12 personal records on Saturday at the Desert Heat Classic. The Hawkeyes also closed out competition at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
In Tucson, Iowa’s first win of the day came in the women’s discus. Senior Kat Moody fired a lifetime best of 56.84 meters (186’ 5”) to take gold and improve her standing at fourth in Iowa program history.
Moody followed the win up with a second place showing in the women’s shot put, throwing 16.43 meters (53’ 11”); sophomore Wisdom Willaims took fourth in the event at 15.78 meters (51’ 9.25”), a personal record of her own.
“Kat gave us the performance of the day for the throwers,” says throws coach Ray Robinson. “She opened with a new PR in the discus, moving up the top-10 list, and finished with another solid, steady double.”
The next Hawkeye victory came in the women’s 100 hurdles, as senior Paige Magee won with a blazing 12.99.
Iowa finished the night with a win from freshman Precious Irivi in the men’s triple jump. Irivi lept 15.21 meters (49’ 11”) to earn the victory while making his debut in the outdoor event.
Freshman Daniela Wamokpego triple-jumped 13.15 meters (43’ 1.75”), good for second place at the meet and third in the Hawkeye women’s record book. Wamokepego’s previous best of 12.38 meters tied for ninth in school history.
The women’s 4×100 crew of sophomore Juila Pattison, junior Lia Love, sophomore Holly Duax and Magee ran 44.07 to place fifth in a loaded field. That time ranks third in women’s program history.
Senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch finished runner-up in the women’s 800 meters, racing 2:04.79. Three Hawkeeys placed inside the top eight in the event, including seniors Amber Aesoph (2:09.42) and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch (2:09.82), finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the men’s 800 meters, senior Rivaldo Marshall took second with a time of 1:46.38.
Senior Kalen Walker placed second in the men’s 100 meters, racing 10.20. That time was just two-thousandths back from first place. In the women’s 1,500 meters, Aesoph ran 4:23.53 for third place.
At the Drake Relays, the group of sophomore Aleah Tenpas, junior Laney Fitzpatrick, sophomore Gabby Cortez and junior Miriam Sandeen placed 14th in the distance medley. The squad raced 11:59.28 at Drake Stadium.
