IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field capped the weekend with another school record at the Jimmy Grant Invitational on Saturday night at the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility. Returning All-American Daniela Wamokpego tallied a 13.32-meter mark in the triple jump, updating Iowa’s program record and tying the national lead.
In addition to the school record, the Hawkeyes totaled nine personal bests and six updates to the program’s top-10 list.
“Daniela has big marks in front of her," Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. "She had a couple of fouls that were probably a foot or two further. Pauline had a terrific meet. Scoring over 4,200 points in her first pentathlon in the United States was really impressive. I think she can add another 150 points to her total. Luke Knepp crushed it today. He had help from some teammates setting him up and then he throttled that last 600 by himself. Overall, every event was really strong today."
Six Hawkeyes won events in their debuts, including Alivia Williams (300 meters), Terrick Johnson (600 meters), Damaris Mutunga (600 meters), Luke Knepp (3,000 meters), Ethan Glyde (high jump) and Pauline Bikembo (pentathlon). Bikembo (4,229 points) and Mutunga (1:28.19) rose to second and third all-time at Iowa in their respective events to open the season. Knepp’s 8:05.72 is the sixth fastest time in program history.
At the time of completion, Bikembo’s point total was second in Division I. The women’s 4x400 team of Arianna Williams, Holly Duax, Alli Bookin-Nosbisch and Chioma Nwachukwu recorded a time of 3:39.19, which at the time, ranked fourth nationally.
Iowa’s sprinters got off to a good start with Duax and Austin Kresley sweeping their respective 60-meter races. Duax won in 7.46, while Kresley claimed the men’s title in 6.67. Sophomore Kai Graves-Blanks won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.00.
The women’s multis started the day in dominating fashion, led by Bikembo who finished with 4,229 points, ranking second all-time at Iowa and in Division 1. Bikembo was the Hawkeyes’ top finisher in every event. Sophomore Annie Wirth earned a personal record in the long jump at 5.53 meters and finished second on the day with 3,872 points, a personal record and ranking sixth all-time at Iowa.
