IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field opened day one of the annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday. Alivia Bauer, Alli Bookin-Nosbisch, Lia Love and Miles Wilson claimed event titles for the Hawkeyes.
On the track inside the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility, Love raced 24.04 to win the women’s 200 meter premier. In the women’s 600-meter premier, Bookin-Nosbisch crossed the line first in 1:28.78. Wilson led the men’s distance group in the 3,000 meters, breaking the tape in 8:21.25. At the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, Bauer led the way in the women’s weight throw, winning with an 18.89-meter toss.
Junior Wisdom Williams got the day started in the women’s shot put, finishing in second place with a mark of 15.55 meters. On the men’s side, freshman Bryce Ruland secured a personal record of 16.87 meters to finish seventh for the Hawkeyes, while freshman Duke Faley placed ninth (16.06 meters).
Williams also secured second with a 18.41 meter mark in the weight throw. Sophomore Sydnie Smith (17.47 meters) and freshman Peyton Wilson (16.81 meters) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. To finish the weight throws, sophomore Ryan Johnson was the top collegiate finisher, placing second overall at 23.45 meters. Sean Smith, Austin Busch and Walker Whalen filled up the top five for the Hawkeyes. Unattached Tanner Berg threw a world-leading 24.72 meters.
"We did a nice job competing today against some competition that pushed our upper limits," associate head coach Ray Robinson said of his throws group. "It's a really fine line to test your limits without pressing too much or trying too hard. It's important to execute with patient, intense effort. Bryce did a good job getting a PR in the shot put. Sean had a great series. The good thing with Sean right now is that he is elevating his floor. Any day he's going to throw at least 22 meters. Wisdom took a big step in the shot put and I am really proud of her."
Iowa had silver-medal finishes from juniors Brayden Burnett, Gabby Cortez and Alexandria Edison, senior Austin Kresley and freshman Elena Torres. Burnett notched an 8:22.55 personal best in the men’s 3,000 meters. Cortez placed second in 1:28.85 in the 600 meters. Edison crossed right after Love in the 200 meters, stopping the clock in 24.28. Kresley made his 200-meter season debut and finished in 21.18. Torres passed several opponents in the final lap to place second (9:35.80) in the women’s 3,000-meter premier.
The Hawkeyes scored additional personal bests from Ali Frandsen, Derek Leicht and Miriam Sandeen.
Up Next: The Larry Wieczorek Invitational resumes on Saturday at the Hawkeye Indoor Track Facility with the pole vault, triple jump and mile beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CT). Admission is free.
