The Hawkeyes conclude their regular season at the Cyclone Twilight in Ames at 3 p.m. on Friday. Iowa will attend with a group of sprinters, hurdlers and distance runners.

2026 NEWS

  • Iowa combined to win six titles at the Musco Twilight and Desert Heat Classic.
  • In the 4x100 relays, Darwin Jimenez, Jordan Gross, Jaylin Holmes and Kalen Walker tied the school record with a second-place finish of 38.64 in the men’s relay. The women’s 4x100 quartet of Jailya Ash, Alexandria Edison, Alivia Williams and Holly Duax matched Iowa’s third-fastest time of 44.04 to place fourth.
  • At the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, David Akhalu and the men’s 4x400 relay were event winners. Akhalu ran a lifetime best of 45.05 to win the 400-meter title and move to fourth in school history. 
  • Tyrese Miller, Landon Fontenot, Prior Ochonogor and Terrick Johnson teamed up to speed to a 3:06.35 finish. The women’s group of Izzy Zahn, Olicia Lucas, Alivia Williams and Damaris Mutunga clocked Iowa’s ninth-quickest mark in school history and placed second overall in 3:32.14. 
  • At Musco Twilight Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt broke the 60-meter barrier for the first time in their careers. Wilson won the event on her final throw at 60.95 meters, while Flynt placed second at 60.79 meters on her last attempt. The duo climbed the program’s all-time list and now have the fifth and sixth longest throws in school history.
  • Ryan Johnson won the title with a series-best 74.60 meters. Sean Smith (66.88 meters) and Tate Joens (66.30 meters) turned in solid performances and placed second and third, respectively. Austin Busch rounded out the top five at 58.99 meters and Walker Whalen capped his day at 55.51 meters. 
  • Freshman Isabel Evans secured the 100-meter hurdle event title, clocking a 14.22. 
  • In the women’s 3,000 meters, Rowan Boulter grabbed the win in a personal-best 10:07.11.
  • Kalen Walker (10.19) and Darwin Jimenez (10.23) earned top-five finishes in the men’s 100 meters. Walker earned second and Jimenez took home fourth.
  • Princess Uche led the Hawkeyes in the 400 meters. Uche moved to seventh on the program’s all-time list with her silver-medal time of 52.10. More highlights from the 400 meters included Tyrese Miller’s 45.88 personal record that updated his time of 10th on Iowa’s all-time list. Landon Fontenot (45.92) and Austin Rowswell (46.66) sprinted personal bests, as well.

LAST TIME OUT

The Hawkeyes made nine adjustments to the top 10 record book at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, last weekend. Iowa’s 4x100 relay team of Darwin Jimenez, Jordan Gross, Jaylin Holmes and Kalen Walker matched the school record in 38.64 while placing second overall. The women’s 4x100 of Jailya Ash, Alexandria Edison, Alivia Williams and Holly Duax tied for the program’s third-fastest time in 44.04. Terrick Johnson ran 1:46.87 to place fourth in the 800 meters and move to third all-time at Iowa. David Akhalu ran 45.05 in the 400 to win the Desert Heat title and set Iowa’s fourth-fastest time. Lovisa Ulvenstam wound up on the long jump top 10 with a mark of 6.13 meters. She is seventh all-time at Iowa. At the Musco Twilight in Coralville, the throwers led the way. Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt updated the record book in the hammer throw, taking the top two spots and moving to fifth and sixth at Iowa, respectively. Both Hawkeyes broke the 60-meter barrier for the first time in their careers. Bryce Ruland posted the eighth longest throw in the discus, winning the title at 58.02 meters.

RELAY MOMENTUM

Two of Iowa’s relays are ranked in the top 15 heading into the final week of the regular season. The men’s 4x100 rose to No. 5 in the NCAA after its 38.64 at the Desert Heat Cassic on May 2. Darwin Jimenez, Jordan Gross, Jaylin Holmes and Kalen Walker grouped up for the first time this season to tie Iowa’s school record. On the women’s side, the 4x400 quartet of Princess Uche, Damaris Mutunga, Alivia Williams and Chioma Nwachukwu raced 3:29.33 at the Tom Jones Memorial and are currently ranked No. 13 in the NCAA.

LETTING IT FLY

Iowa throwers have accounted for five record book adjustments this season. Since opening at the Jim Duncan Invite, Ryan Johnson has reset the program best in the men’s hammer throw twice. Along with that, he has been named the B1G Field Athlete of the Week on two occasions. Newcomer Tate Joens quickly made his mark in Iowa’s history books, climbing to 4th all time at the Big Red Classic. Along with Johnson and Joens, Iowa is poised to have four hammer throw entries at the NCAA First Rounds, including Austin Busch and Sean Smith. At the Musco Twilight, Bryce Ruland fired the discus a career-best 58.02 meters to move into 8th all-time at Iowa. He is ranked No. 16 in the West Region. Ruland is also on the current qualifying list in the shot put. On the women’s side, Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt hold top-10 marks in the hammer throw. The duo surpassed the 60-meter mark for the first time in their careers at the Musco Twilight on May 1. Wilson ranks fifth at Iowa at 60.95 meters, while Flynt is sixth at 60.79. Both Wilson and Flynt are within the top 30 of the West Region.

B1G HONORS

Ryan Johnson was the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week twice during the month of April. The junior thrower won back-to-back hammer throw competitions at the Jim Duncan Invite and Big Red Classic. He updated his school record and currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA with a best of 77.64 meters. Two more Hawkeyes were named Big Ten Athletes of the Week on March 25. Emmanuel Njoku's 7.95-meter jump led the nation at the time. He won the title at the UCF Black & Gold Invite to open outdoor season. Prior Ochonogor kicked off his outdoor campaign with a title in the 400-meter hurdles. Ochonogor's time of 50.20 led the nation after opening week. He moved to 7th on Iowa's all-time list. 

IN THE RANKINGS

The Iowa men's team returned to the top 25, coming in at No. 18 this week. The men climbed to the top of the Midwest, overtaking Minnesota. The women moved up two spots in the Midwest and rank fourth. The Hawkeyes have eight events ranked in the top 15 nationally. The men's hammer throw ranks second, while the 400-meter hurdles group is third. The 400 meters unit is ranked sixth, while the 110-hurdles are ninth and 100 meters group is 11th. The women's team is represented by the 400 meters (No. 7), 800 meters (No. 9) and the 10,000 meters (No. 15).
