THIS WEEK

The Hawkeyes hit the road for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Competition begins Friday, Feb. 6, in Albuquerque and continues Saturday, Feb. 7. The Iowa State Classic is a Friday-only meet.

A YouTube stream will be provided for home meets and can also be found on the schedule page. The meet at New Mexico will stream on FloTrack (subscription required).

2026 NEWS

  • Kalen Walker placed ninth in the 60 meters (6.73) at the 118th Millrose Games.
  • Caleb Levy claimed the top spot in the men’s 600 meters with a personal-best 1:17.05 at the Meyo Invitational. David Akhalu, Derek Leicht, and Terrick Johnson followed close behind, as the Hawkeyes claimed four of the top five spots.
  • Gabby Cortez led the way for the Hawkeyes in the women's 600 meters as the top collegiate finisher. Cortez clocked a personal-best 1:27.89, which ranks third all-time at Iowa.
  • The women’s distance medley relay team of Rosemary Arthur, Leanna Lewis, Clare Kelly, and Julia Gehl posted an 11:27.97 finish to move into the program’s all-time list. The group is 10th in school history.
  • The 4x400 relay team of Princess Uche, Leanna Lewis, Gabby Cortez, and Caila Lyons captured the title with a time of 3:40.13. The men’s team of Prior Ochonogor, David Akhalu, Terrick Johnson, and Jackson Johannes earned the silver in 3:12.01 on the men’s side.
  • Gabby Cortez led the charge in the 800 meters with a personal-best 2:04.79, which is third all-time at Iowa. Leanna Lewis also set a lifetime best at 2:06.53, ranking seventh in program history.
  • ​​In the men’s mile championship, junior Carson Lane made his way into the program record books with a time of 4:04.15. The mark is a lifetime best for Lane and ranks third all-time in program history. 
  • Senior Hayden Kuhn joined the all-time list with a sixth-place finish in the Ryan Shay men’s 3,000-meter championship, crossing the line in 8:02.98. That time is good for sixth at Iowa.
  • Sprinter Darwin Jimenez won the Track Guy Foundation 60 Meters in his debut at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. Jimenez's time of 6.56 ranks second all-time at Iowa. 
  • Chioma Nwachukwu ran a personal-best 23.43 to move into the program’s record book and set the facility and Wieczorek Invitational meet record. Nwachukwu raced to Iowa’s fifth-fastest time on her way to the Jimmy Grant Memorial 200-meter title
  • In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, Blake Nyenati took gold, crossing the line in 7.80, while Vaughn DeVaughn III cracked the all-time list with his second-place finish at the Larry Wieczorek Invite finals. DeVaughn clocked a personal-best 7.82, which ranks tenth in Iowa history.

LAST TIME OUT

The University of Iowa track and field team had a strong showing at the Meyo Invitational, including junior Caleb Levy’s win in the men’s 600 meters with a personal-best 1:17.05. David Akhalu, Derek Leicht, and Terrick Johnson followed close behind, as the Hawkeyes claimed four of the top five spots. Senior Gabby Cortez led the women with a personal-best in the 600 meters and 800 meters, both ranking third all-time at Iowa. Iowa also captured the women’s 4x400-meter relay title, while the men’s 4x400 earned silver. Multiple Hawkeyes moved into the program record books, including Carson Lane in the men’s mile (third all-time) and Hayden Kuhn in the men’s 3,000 meters (sixth all-time). The Hawkeyes totaled 10 personal bests and four updates to the program’s all-time lists during the two-day meet.

IN THE RANKINGS

For the second straight week, the Iowa men's team makes an appearance in the USTFCCCA top 25. The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 23. Iowa is joined by five other Big Ten schools in the men's top 25. Oregon (No. 3) and Penn State (No. 4) are ranked inside the top 10. No. 13 Illinois, No. 17 Washington and No. 24 Nebraska represent the league on the men's side. On the women's side, Illinois is ranked No. 2. Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State and Washington are also ranked. Regionally, Iowa's women's team is second in the Midwest. The men are ranked fifth in the Midwest region. 

INDIVIDUALS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Hawkeyes have combined for 14 marks that are ranked within the top 25 of their respective event groups, including weight throw, where Ryan Johnson is ranked No. 1. Damaris Mutunga holds Iowa's highest ranking of the women's side and is currently No. 6 in the 600 meters. Darwin Jimenez is in a tie for the seventh-fastest 60-meter time. Sean Smith is ranked 11th in the weight throw. In the 600 meters, Terrick Johnson (No. 12) and Caleb Levy (No. 17) are positioned inside the top 25. Sal Capaldo holds the No. 20 spot in the heptathlon. In the women's rankings, Gabby Cortez (No. 9) and Leanna Lewis (No. 19) join Mutunga in a stacked 600-meter class. Cortez crept up to 25th in the 800 meters with her 2:04.79 from the Meyo Invite. Chioma Nwachukwu is No. 10 in the country in the 400 meters. Multi Carlee Rochford is 16th in DI in the pentathlon following her December performance at the Jimmy Grant Invite. From the relays, Iowa's women's 4x400 has turned in the 11th-fastest time so far this season. Iowa's women's DRM ran the 23rd-fastest time at the Meyo Invite.

LAST TIME HERE

Last season in Albuquerque, the women’s 4x400 relay of Alivia Williams, Chioma Nwachukwu, Damaris Mutunga, and Olicia Lucas shattered the Iowa record with a 3:30.42, at the time ranked fifth nationally. Austin Kresley climbed to third all-time at Iowa in the 200 meters with a personal-best 20.73. In Ames, Ryan Johnson delivered a standout performance in the weight throw, launching a then school-record 24.15 meters to claim the event title. On the women’s side, three Hawkeyes made their mark on the all-time list in the 400 meters. At the time, Nwachukwu (52.46) sat in fourth, while Mutunga (52.49) and Williams (53.11) held the fifth and eighth spots, respectively. Olicia Lucas (54.16) and Gabby Cortez (54.68) tallied personal bests. The Hawkeyes totaled 18 personal bests and 10 updates to the all-time list. 

HAULING IN THE HONORS

Sprinters Jordan Gross, Dymonde Nave, Blake Nyenati, Izzy Zahn, along with thrower Ryan Johnson and mid-distance runner Caila Lyons, earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week recognition following standout performances at the Jimmy Grant Invite and Hawkeye Invitational. Gross was the Big Ten Men's Freshman of the Week after posting a team-best 6.77 in the 60 meters. He was the second-fastest collegian in the 300, racing a 33.49. Nave took home the Big Ten Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honor after winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.44. Nyenati posted the program’s seventh-fastest time (7.73) in the 60-meter hurdles to earn the Big Ten’s Men’s Track Athlete of the Week award. Zahn earned the Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week honor after posting a meet record of 38.14 in the 300 meters at the Jimmy Grant Invite. To cap the meet, Zahn ran the second leg of Iowa’s 4x400 relay that placed second in 3:46.76. Johnson earned Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after a historic 24.85-meter weight throw at the Hawkeye Invitational, ranking fourth in NCAA Division I history and setting Iowa’s school, facility, and meet records. Lyons was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week after winning the 600 meters in 1:31.12 and anchoring Iowa’s winning 4x400 relay with a meet-best 55.50 split.

SCHEDULE NOTES

Iowa will return home for the Iowa Open on Feb. 20 which will be the final home meet of the indoor season. This year's Big Ten Indoor Championships will be a three-day event, beginning on Thursday and ending on Saturday.
