Arboleda Breaks High Jump School Record at Musco

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team capped off the 23rd-annual Musco Twilight at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Outdoor Track and Field Complex on Saturday with 18 event titles and Maria Arboleda’s school record-breaking high jump.

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team capped off the 23rd-annual Musco Twilight at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Outdoor Track and Field Complex on Saturday with 18 event titles and Maria Arboleda’s school record-breaking high jump. 

In the women’s high jump, freshman Maria Arboleda broke her own school record and set a facility record with a jump of 1.88 meters (6’ 2”). Arboleda’s performance moved her to fifth in the NCAA. 

“I thought we had a lot of terrific performances throughout the weekend,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Maria (Arboleda) continues to prove she’s one of the best high jumpers in the nation, as she hit a huge lifetime best today and set the school record again.”

In the women’s triple jump, freshman Jeanne Le Goff set a new personal best of 13.06 meters (42’ 10.25”) and moved to fourth all time at Iowa. “I was very happy for Jeanne jumping over 13 meters for the first time ever. She’s building great momentum going into the championship season,” Woody said.

Sophomore Sydnie Smith posted the top throw of the day in the women’s discus, throwing 51.71 meters (169’ 8”).

In the men’s discus, freshman Bryce Ruland took second and was the top collegian with a throw of 54.62 meters (179’ 2”). Redshirt freshman Duke Faley placed third, throwing 53.96 meters (177’ 0”). 

Junior Wisdom Williams placed second in the women’s shot put with a throw of 15.57 meters (51’ 1”), and sophomore Carlee Rochford took seventh with a mark of 11.44 meters (37’ 6.50”).

The Hawkeyes took the top three spots in the women’s 200 meters, led by senior Lia Love setting a new meet record of 23.21 seconds. Freshman Alivia Williams earned the silver medal with a new personal best of 23.55, which moved her to 9th all time at Iowa. Freshman Damaris Mutunga placed third in 23.88 seconds. 

Senior Kalen Walker took first in the men’s 100 meters running 10.11. Senior Joe Stein ran 10.57, placing second. 

“Kalen had some redemption today after having a false start at Drake last weekend. He ran his 3rd fastest wind-legal time and continues to build on a great season,” Woody added.

In the women’s 100 meters, senior Lia Love took first running 11.33, while junior Holly Duax placed second with a time of 11.41 seconds.

Freshman Pauline Bikembo set a new personal best and took first in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.87 seconds. Sophomore Carlee Rochford ran in 14.51 seconds, placing fourth. 

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, senior Kalil Johnson took first, running 14.04 seconds. Freshman Drew Dillard placed fourth with a time of 14.58 seconds. 

In the women’s 400 meters, sophomore Olicia Lucas earned first place with a time of 54.21 seconds.

The Hawkeyes dominated the men’s 400 meters, taking home three of the top four spots. Freshman Landon Fontenot took first, running 47.14 seconds. Sophomore Josh Pugh placed second with a time of 47.51, and freshman Braedin Zondervan earned fourth, running a 48.37.

Sophomore Ali Frandsen placed first in the women’s 400 meter hurdles running a 59.13. Freshman Claire Kohler set a personal record of 1:00.28 and placed fourth, while junior Ellie Rickersten followed closely behind in fifth at 1:00.57. In the men’s 400 meter hurdles, junior Jaylin Holmes took first setting a new personal best of 51.20. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Gorsich placed second in 52.29 seconds.

Junior Gabby Cortez took first place, set a new lifetime best and moved to 4th all-time at Iowa in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:05.39. Sophomore Clare Kelly placed second, running 2:12.42 and junior Jalyssa Blazek took third with a time of 2:13.07. Another individual best was set by junior Lily Johannes, who placed seventh in 2:13.84. Sophomore James Fingalsen placed first in the men’s 800 meters in 1:49.03.

In the women’s 3000 meters, freshman Julia Gehl took first place in 10:18.57. Sophomore Audra Soderlind came in third with a time of 10:26.23, and junior Rowan Boulter set a new PR and placed fifth in 10:27.49. Freshman Marissa Long placed fifth in 10:31.83, and junior Ellie Rathe took seventh in 10:41.68

Freshman Kyle Montgomery took first in the men’s 3000 meters in 8:34.74.

In the women’s 4x400-meter relay, the team of junior Ellie Rickertsen, freshman Damaris Mutunga, senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch, and sophomore Ali Frandsen placed first with a time of 3:43.38. Freshman Claire Kohler, junior Lily Johannes, junior Isabelle Woody, and sophomore Clare Kelly placed third in 3:57.43.

In the men’s 4x400-meter relay, junior Terrick Johnson, freshman Braedin Zondervan, junior Ryan Schreiner, and sophomore James Fingalsen placed second in 3:12.33. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Gorsich, sophomore Caleb Levy, junior Derek Leicht, and redshirt freshman Will Davidson took fourth in 3:22.31.

In the men’s high jump, Dillard and Ethan Glyde took first and second, respectively, both jumping 2.05 meters (6’ 8.75”). 

“Overall, we had a terrific Musco Twilight with a lot of event champions and PR’s and season’s best performances,” Woody concluded. “Yesterday, Mike (Stein) started the weekend off with a huge season's best throw in the javelin and is building his confidence at the right time as we enter the championship season. It was great to see Ryan (Johnson) have another terrific weekend in the hammer, throwing a two  meter personal best and continue to reset the record books.”

The program recognized 19 seniors on Saturday.
