Senior Lizzy Korczak also secured a bronze medal in the women’s javelin with a throw of 51.81 meters, matching her third-place finish from last season. Iowa totaled five third-place finishes on the final day, with strong contributions in the 400-meter events, hurdles, and relays. Freshman David Akhalu and Damaris Mutunga led the Hawkeyes in the men’s and women’s 400-meter finals, while Vaughn DeVaughn III and Blake Nyenati combined to score nine points in the high hurdles. The Hawkeyes also posted top-10 program times in both 4x100 relays and capped off the Big Ten Championships with a third-place finish in the men’s 4x400 relay. The men's team placed 7th overall, while the women were 10th.
2025 NCAA WEST FIRST ROUNDS
Last season, the Hawkeyes had 14 entries advance to Hayward Field for the 2025 NCAA Championships. Throwers Ryan Johnson, Sean Smith and Mike Stein advanced through the preliminaries, along with Kalen Walker and the men’s 4x400-meter relay team. Walker set a school record and ran the sixth-fastest time in the world in the 100 meters. The Hawkeyes’ men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Tyrese Miller, Zidane Brown, Josh Pugh and Terrick Johnson secured its trip to Eugene with an impressive 3:03.88 performance, placing second in its heat and ninth overall. The women’s 4x400-relay team of Alivia Williams, Damaris Mutunga, Olicia Lucas and Chioma Nwachukwu took down a school record and booked a trip to nationals with a 3:26.90 finish. The quartet improved on their previous top-10 mark at Iowa to secure the big Q and a second-place overall finish.
LETTING IT FLY
Iowa throwers have accounted for five record book adjustments this season. Since opening at the Jim Duncan Invite, Ryan Johnson has reset the program best in the men’s hammer throw twice. Along with that, he has been named the B1G Field Athlete of the Week on two occasions. Newcomer Tate Joens quickly made his mark in Iowa’s history books, climbing to 4th all time at the Big Red Classic. Along with Johnson and Joens, Iowa has four hammer throw entries at the NCAA First Rounds, including Austin Busch and Sean Smith. At the Musco Twilight, Bryce Ruland fired the discus a career-best 58.02 meters to move into 8th all-time at Iowa. On the women’s side, Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt hold top-10 marks in the hammer throw. The duo surpassed the 60-meter mark for the first time in their careers at the Musco Twilight on May 1. Wilson ranks fifth at Iowa at 60.95 meters, while Flynt is sixth at 60.79.
